A Spotlight on the Ocean's Scientists

This term, Year Two have been finding out about animal habitats and how animals adapt to and are affected by their environments.

This week, they found out about the life of an important scientist called Rachel Carson.  This American woman was one of the first people to realise the impact that pesticides were having on the seas and oceans around us.  She started by studying nature as a child and then earnt her living writing articles about animals in the wild.  Her study of the oceans led to her investigating the impact of chemicals on the animals themselves.

The children created a mini experiment to look at what happens when pesticides drain into the water and recorded their ideas about pollution.  Chetan said it was important to look after our environment and not use chemicals, if we were to keep the oceans and animals safe. Evie linked this study with today’s campaigns to stop plastics getting into the seas.
