Living in a Material World

Year 4 science

Year Four have been learning about the properties of solids and liquids.   They investigated materials such as salt, flour, rice grains and coffee granules.

Sabirah explained that solids keep their shape and you can hold solids; whilst Adam recognised that liquids can be poured and you cannot actually hold a liquid. The class saw that liquids also take the shape of the container they are in.

The next question posed was, were the materials under consideration solids or liquids? Max observed that these materials could be poured… so were they liquids?   This really puzzled the class. After a few probing questions from Mrs Khan,   the class have come to the conclusion that some solids can be poured because they are very small solids.
